Originally known as GNS Contracting Corp., Mr. William Gremler and Mr. Cliff Saunders founded the company in 1974 in order to provide solutions to the growing number of water issues arising on the North Fork of Long Island. In 1996, current owner Mr. John Scaramucci purchased the business, which had expanded its service area to most of Suffolk County and some of Nassau County. GNS's name was changed to GNS/Mermaid Water Systems, with intentions to eventually phase out the “GNS” portion (GNS stands for 'Gremler and Saunders'). Today, Mermaid has increased the density of its coverage in Suffolk and Nassau and expanded even further, servicing clients in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. In addition to changing the culture of the company and adding many new faces, Scaramucci also developed a sound method of testing and personally certifying any equipment that was to be sold and installed. As a former carpenter and owner of Scaramucci Construction, John’s mantra is “measure twice, cut once.” He has applied this to all aspects of the company and his life, just ask any of his colleagues or his three sons, two of which are current GNS/Mermaid employees. Ninety acres of vinifera grapes grow under the watchful eye of the soaring Osprey, our vineyard’s namesake. Our state-of-the-art winery shows our commitment to fine winemaking. Our first vines were planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. An additional 16 acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the early 90’s, when we purchases 50 acres of land and buildings at our present Main road location in Peconic, that we began producing and selling the Osprey brand. In 2012, our entire Richmond Creek second label was introduced to compliment the Osprey line. Although the Long Island wine region is located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France, at Osprey’s Dominion we truly believe our location (being surrounded, yet sheltered, by both the LI Sound and Peconic Bay) and the complexity of the farming soil here, contribute significantly to the quality and character of our grapes, and hence, our wines. Our overall philosophy is to produce the best wines with the least interference from humankind. We believe that our unique location, soil complexity and Mother Nature give us something different to work with each year, and it is our job and vocation to develop what we’ve been given, into the very best it can be. The History of Suffolk Designer Lighting Over 40 years ago, Bill and Dolores Kreitsek opened Suffolk Designer Lighting ("SDL") in Riverhead, New York. At that time, SDL catered mainly to local electricians and homeowners. In 1974, SDL moved to a new facility on East Main Street in Riverhead. While on East Main Street, SDL grew its electrical and lighting business, selling to a wide array of customers on both Forks of Long Island and Western Suffolk County. In 1985, SDL opened its store in Southampton, the location where SDL still operates. Over the past 23 years, SDL has continued to grow, but remains a closely held family business that emphasizes its relationships with its customers. For over 40 years, SDL has been a leader in illumination. Today, the business serves the entire East Coast from its home in Southampton. SDL stocks hundreds of fixtures from more than 450 manufacturers in newly renovated 8000 square foot showroom. Proudly serving you since 1930 Beginning in the early 1930's my dad Maurice started his own plumbing and heating business. He needed to sub-contract well drillers to supply the water for the jobs. It came to be so difficult finding reliable well drillers that he finally decided to start drilling his own wells. He was so successful at this that he gradually gave up plumbing and heating to specialize exclusively in wells. As a young man I saw the opportunity in the field and so instead of going to college I joined him in the well business. That was in 1948 after I graduated from high school. In those days we would improvise our own rigs out of old 1927 Buicks with attached "cat head" drives off the rear wheels. That was a method that was so dangerous that it eventually became illegal. In 1955 we bought our first factory-made cable tool machine. (What an improvement - a blessing!) Over the past 50 years the drilling equipment and materials that we use have changed dramatically. They are a lot safer! We now have 5 rotary well machines that install PVC wells with stainless steel screens that are state of the art for quality and long term trouble-free service. Now my sons, daughters and grandsons are all working for the family business.
