The History of Suffolk Designer Lighting Over 40 years ago, Bill and Dolores Kreitsek opened Suffolk Designer Lighting ("SDL") in Riverhead, New York. At that time, SDL catered mainly to local electricians and homeowners. In 1974, SDL moved to a new facility on East Main Street in Riverhead. Originally known as GNS Contracting Corp., Mr. William Gremler and Mr. Cliff Saunders founded the company in 1974 in order to provide solutions to the growing number of water issues arising on the North Fork of Long Island. In 1996, current owner Mr. John Scaramucci purchased the business, which had expanded its service area to most of Suffolk County and some of Nassau County. GNS's name was changed to GNS/Mermaid Water Systems, with intentions to eventually phase out the “GNS” portion (GNS stands for 'Gremler and Saunders'). Proudly serving you since 1930 Beginning in the early 1930's my dad Maurice started his own plumbing and heating business. He needed to sub-contract well drillers to supply the water for the jobs. It came to be so difficult finding reliable well drillers that he finally decided to start drilling his own wells. He was so successful at this that he gradually gave up plumbing and heating to specialize exclusively in wells. As a young man I saw the opportunity in the field and so instead of going to college I joined him in the well business. That was in 1948 after I graduated from high school. In those days we would improvise our own rigs out of old 1927 Buicks with attached "cat head" drives off the rear wheels. That was a method that was so dangerous that it eventually became illegal. In 1955 we bought our first factory-made cable tool machine. (What an improvement - a blessing!) Over the past 50 years the drilling equipment and materials that we use have changed dramatically. They are a lot safer! We now have 5 rotary well machines that install PVC wells with stainless steel screens that are state of the art for quality and long term trouble-free service. Now my sons, daughters and grandsons are all working for the family business. We have been growing and selling grapes on Long Island’s North Fork since the mid 1990s in the hamlet of Cutchogue, where we have our family home. Russ McCall planted our first vineyard knowing he would wait until the vines were mature and time was right to release his first wines. He wasn’t interested in putting our family name on a bottle unless it was worthy. 2007 was the vintage we found to be our jumping off point. Since then we have followed a model of winemaking focused on getting consistent results. Quality begins with farming. Bob and Joyce Pellegrini were one of the original pioneers in the Long Island wine community. After partnering in a small vineyard in the 80’s, they quickly realized the potential of the North Fork region. In 1991, the Pellegrini’s purchased their own vineyard and built a 14,000 square foot winery complex that was one of the very first wineries that integrated the entire winemaking process. After a year of planning, Bob, a NYC based graphic designer worked side by side with builders to create an architecturally striking two-story tasting room bolstered by oak posts and hand-hewn beams. A trellised walkway connects it to the spacious and modern production facility where visitors can watch the wine making process.
